Cairo Trips

Why Downtown is my favorite stomping grounds

Downtown Cairo is an area of the city with
the biggest selection of budget accommodation and cheap eating options.
Downtown area is popular with Egyptians and international tourists alike. If
you’re in town for a few days, at some point, even if you’re not staying in the
area, you’ll most likely find yourself in this glamorous spot looking for
things to do in Downtown Cairo.

And the following is a short list of some important highlights
that you may wish to visit soon:

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo:

Discover how to fly for free & travel on a shoestring budget…

A must-see for any visitor to the city of Cairo. The Gold King Tutankhamuns treasure room on the 2nd
floor is displayed is also definitely a ‘must see’, as is the Mummy
Rooms. Beware, mummy rooms are not for the faint-hearted, and only the
Gold Room and the Mummy Rooms are air conditioned, and you must pay an
additional fee to see the Mummy Rooms. A brand new Egyptian Museum (GEM =
Global Egyptian Museum) to replace some parts of this one is currently
under construction and soon will be inaugurated close to the pyramids at
Giza.

Downtown is busy enough during daylight hours, but after sunset is when
the majority of locals and tourists hang out and about. The streets are
buzzing  with activities such as but not limited to dining out, drinking
tea or even smoking shisha.

You don’t have to join in, simply wandering the crowded streets and
soaking up the late night atmosphere is fun enough and one of the
recommended things to do in the magnificent Downtown Cairo. Try to stay
up until midnight when Downtown Cairo really comes to life.

The palace, designed in the 1800s by a French architect, is worth seeing
including the fountain courtyard. Built on the site of a small mansion
owned by Abdeen Bey, Abdeen Palace, which is named after him, is
considered one of the most sumptuous palaces in the world in terms of
its adornments, paintings, and a large number of clocks scattered in the
parlors and wings, most of which are decorated with pure gold.

I also came across a nice post about some Iconic building in Downtown, Cairo “SAID HALIM PALACE” this article was written by Vanilla Papers, and the following lines are excerpted from it:

Built for Said Halim Pasha (who never moved in) by architect Antonio
Lasciac, the building was later turned into the al-Nasriya School for
Boys.

“You could feel the grandeur of the place as soon as you entered the
large entrance court. … As children, we used to be really scared of the
architecture of the palace once night fell, especially the basements.”

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and looking forward to seeing you
